We all know the nightmare fuel image of the Plague Doctor. But this design, created by Charles de Lorme, was actually rooted in science—well, the science of the 1600s. Doctors believed in "Miasma theory," thinking disease spread through bad smells. The long beak wasn't just a mask; it was a filter packed with burning herbs and spices to "cleanse" the air before it hit the doctor's nose. Surprisingly, the heavy leather coat actually worked, acting as an early hazmat suit that prevented fleas (the actual carriers of the plague) from biting them. But the design wasn't perfect. The trousers often stopped short, leaving the doctors' ankles exposed to flea bites—a tiny gap in the armor that cost many of them their lives. #book_records, #facts, #interestingfacts, #worldrecords, #science, #history, #childheroes, #doctors, #shorts
