In this video, Dr Sarah Myhill discusses the crucial importance of diet in treating CFS/ME. Not only is diet vital for treating CFS/ME, but also in metabolic syndrome, which leads to diabetes, together with our global pandemics of dementia, cancer, heart disease and degenerative disorders. Metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes and various degenerative diseases have excellent scientific research which clearly links their causation to the over-consumption of carbohydrates and sugars. These conditions, in their turn, are linked to the rising incidence of cancer, heart disease and dementia. Dr Myhill explains that modern life means that in the First World, we are living in a perpetual time of ‘feast’. Starchy foods, high in sugar, weigh down the shelves in any food shop we walk into, and there are enormous vested financial interests in selling them to us. The weapons of mass destruction are in our supermarkets! For our ancestors, however, the picture was completely different. As a species, the vast majority of our time on this planet has been spent living as hunter-gatherers. While there are significant variations in how different kinds of hunter-gatherers may have eaten, one common thread is certainly that their diets were seasonal, opportunistic, and based on what was available to them at any one time. There was an advantage to gorging on honey and fruits in the autumn because the extra body fat made the winter more survivable. This may explain the highly addictive nature of sugars and simple carbohydrates - as a species, we are primed to consume them until they are gone. But the problem is, in many modern lifestyles, they are present in our lives 365 days a year, with disastrous consequences. Dr Myhill recommends a Paleo Ketogenic diet, which relies on burning fat and fibre for our energy supplies, not sugars and carbs. Much of this ground has been covered in her book “Prevent and Cure Diabetes”, which explains the ‘why’ of this approach, while the Paleo Ketogenic cookbook gives her readers the ‘how to’ of a ketogenic diet. She warns us that the transition from a carb/sugar based energy system to a fat/fibre one can be difficult. Characteristically, she has chosen to lead from the front, and her own diet is a ketogenic one. She describes how she eats, and the profound benefits she’s reaped in terms of energy, stamina, and a healthy body weight. She also talks us through ‘metabolic hinterland’, when your body is trying to switch from its dependence on sugar and carbs to fats and fibres for fuel supplies. One of the reasons that this dietary switch can feel very hard is because sugar and carbohydrates are essentially highly addictive. As with giving up any addictive substance, there is often resistance to change, and a subsequent sense of loss at the absence of an old friend. But this is a friend that is quite likely to kill you. And if you have CFS/ME, it will certainly hinder your attempts to regain your health. A healthy diet, low in fermenting foods such as carbohydrates and sugars, is the fuel necessary for the engine to run clean, and to support a healthy gut flora. Gut health is increasingly recognised as a critical component in immune function. Empowering her patients to take responsibility for what they eat, how they live, and how they engage with the process of regaining their health, has always been a guiding light for Dr Myhill. Everything in this film can also be found in her books. These are all co-authored with Craig Robinson. Sarah paints the picture and Craig adds in the colour!
