The Wakefield Wheel is a 40 mile circular cycle route around the Wakefield area. Created and maintained by the Wakefield District Cycle Forum (http://www.cycling-wakefield.org.uk/), it is 70% off road and incorporates tarmac paths, hardpack singletrack, canal towpaths and farm tracks, linked together with some short(ish) road sections. With a mixture of surfaces, the route is suitable for mountain bikes, hybrids and gravel bikes. Cyclocross bikes will also be fine but skinny road bikes with slick tyres and crap brakes are not really suitable. The route is a steady one, through very easy terrain and the climb to the highest point in Gawthorpe is fairly gentle, whichever way round you go. The whole thing should take 2.5 - 4 hours to get round depending on your level of fitness and type of bike. Just follow the little blue signs (some of which are quite faded and can be tricky to spot). And if you're on an ebike in winter, keep it on Eco or you may not get round :) Here are some highlights of the more interesting bits.
