Accumulation of melanin in the skin can lead to conditions like freckles or malignant melanoma. Hemosiderin 🟤: An iron-storage complex that appears as golden-brown granules in cells, typically due to excessive iron from repeated blood transfusions, hemolysis, or chronic venous congestion. Hemosiderosis can occur when hemosiderin accumulates in organs like the liver, spleen, and lungs. Bilirubin 🟡: A yellow pigment resulting from the breakdown of hemoglobin, typically processed by the liver and excreted in bile. Accumulation leads to jaundice, a condition marked by yellowing of the skin and eyes, indicating liver dysfunction or bile duct obstruction. Lipofuscin 🟠: Known as the "wear-and-tear" pigment, lipofuscin is a yellow-brown pigment composed of lipid-containing residues of lysosomal digestion. It accumulates with aging in post-mitotic cells such as neurons and cardiac myocytes, signifying oxidative stress and cellular aging. Exogenous Pigments: Carbon (Anthracosis) ⚫: Inhalation of carbon particles, commonly seen in urban dwellers or smokers, leads to their accumulation in the lung macrophages and lymph nodes, causing a black discoloration known as anthracosis. While usually harmless, it reflects chronic exposure to polluted air. Tattoo Ink 🎨: Tattoo pigments are introduced exogenously and are engulfed by dermal macrophages, where they can remain indefinitely without causing harm.
