Excerpt from Hanna Maj Piccio's post on FB. The Classic Filipino Love song, Usahay, was written and composed by a Davaoeño! Col. Gregorio Labja of Davao was “more of a musician than a military man.” It was apparent in all the songs he composed in his lifetime that he was a man of art and music. He wrote Usahay back in the 50’s for his one and only love, Noemi Ortega, whom he later married and had 10 children with. Usahay became famous in their community and neighborhood before it became a nationwide hit as Col. Labja would sing the song in birthdays and gatherings and it was in one of these events that the song was taken from him without his permission. The biggest heartbreak a creative or an artist could ever experience is stolen art. In every piece of art, you pour a piece of your soul, memory, and feelings. Col. Labja experienced this heartbreak when he heard his own prized composition on the radio without any sort of recognition or attribution to him. And for over 70 years even until his death in 1991, he remained uncredited for composing the bisaya love song that we all love. It was only in 2015, after a long and arduous fight lead by his family, that the supreme court ruled Col. Labja as the original composer of the song.
