Enhancements: None Emulator Used: Ares Machine: Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth Hardware: Seta Aleck 64 (Based on Nintendo 64) Developer: Hudson Soft Publisher: Hudson Soft Played: Completed the game. Thoughts: Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth was released on both the arcade and Nintendo 64. Both versions were developed by Hudson Soft and the Nintendo 64 version was published by both Electrobrain and Hudson Soft. The video is showing the arcade version which is running on Seta Aleck 64 hardware which is based on Nintendo 64 hardware. Vanishing Earth is part of a long running series by Hudson Soft. The story like other shmups is really important. You have to go up against an alien force in the far future. Like other shmups, you have powerups that increase firepower and an ex arm which fires a powerful swarm missile. You can also use a barrier to shield yourself and reflect oncoming fire. The barrier is kind of hard to use though. At the start you have three ships to choose from, each with different stats. The game starts pretty easy, but gets pretty challenging by stage three. As far as differences between the arcade and Nintendo 64 versions go the only changes I noticed is that you have limited continues and you don't start right where you die in the Nintendo 64 version making the arcade version much easier. As far as recommending this one I'd say pass on it. It's okay, but there are other great shoot'em'ups in the arcade. Just not on the Nintendo 64 in which there are very few. As far as the Star Soldier series is concerned check out the PC-Engine titles on both CD and Hucard as I think they are higher quality than Vanishing Earth if you want to play some good ones in the series.
