This is a case study from the Food EDU course Foodomics & Society, Module 5: Advancing Foodomics for Translational Impact. Access the full course here: https://education.heart.org/productde... In Western Queensland, Australia Indigenous Peoples have preserved an incredible array of biodiversity for thousands of years, including many foods and medicines found nowhere else in the world. This case study shows how Indigenous communities are partnering with scientists to uncover the complex nutritional and medicine benefits of native plants using foodomics. However, histories of exploitation and extraction underscore the need for recognition and ownership of Indigenous intellectual property. Here mutual respect and collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities are helping restore and maintain cultural knowledge and biodiversity. This case study highlights the impact of colonization on Australia’s Indigenous peoples and lands and underscores the importance of preserving native foods that hold significant health and cultural value. Food EDU is facilitated by the American Heart Association and the Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT as co-secretariats of The Periodic Table of Food Initiative (PTFI).
