The Chapel in Agassiz I You asked me to help you find the chapel in Agassiz; But it’s a difficult task, It’s very remote, you see. II For wilderness dangers rise ’Mid mountains stern and cold; The shadowed crags affright, The forests dark and old. Yet oft such fears declare How frail our fancies be; The chapel that we seek Dwells but in thought, maybe. III And shall we say thereby Our hope is but a dream? Or call unreal the things Unseen, though bright they gleam? Was not that temple shown To Ezekiel from on high, Though earth hath seen it not, Still true before God’s eye? IV Why seek ye, then, a house— A building made with hands? Are not earth’s works but dust Upon unstable sands? Though fair the picture seems Of Agassiz’s shrine, It may not bless thee more Than gifts already thine. V For wrought of wood and stone, Man’s works may tempt the heart; What God alone should have, Such forms may steal apart. Turn, then, from idols vain, From temples carved in clay; A better place awaits Where spirits meet to pray. VI A house not made with hands, Where lively stones unite— There Judah’s stick and Jo’seph’s Become one staff of light. No city of Destruction— But Zion from above, Where saints in concord dwell And praise redeeming love. VII Beneath whose sacred sills Living waters ever flow, And tree of life stand planted In heaven’s perfect row; There shines the Shekinah glory, A light no veil can hide, Whose symmetry and splendour All earthly works out-stride. VIII Yet still thou askest me, “Is longing here below For humble chapels wrong?” Nay, friend, it is not so. For did not God speak thus— When David yearned to raise A house unto His Name— “’Twas well it was thy praise”? IX But still it was not giv’n, The earthly dream to be; And thus we too may yield Our hopes more quietly. For words from friends afar That ring both firm and true, With songs and prayers we share— Should these not make us new? X So let us leave off seeking that chapel in Agassiz; For though our steps were eager, It’s far too remote, you see. “Lacked ye any thing?” Luke 22. 35; Deut. 2. 7 "Be still, and know that I am God" Psalm 46.10 Gadsby Hymn 961: Be still, my heart! these anxious cares To thee are burdens, thorns, and snares; They cast dishonour on thy Lord, And contradict his gracious word. Brought safely by his hand thus far, Why dost thou now give place to fear? How canst thou want if he provide, Or lose thy way with such a guide? Did ever trouble yet befall, And he refuse to hear thy call? And has he not his promise passed, That thou shalt overcome at last? He who has helped me hitherto, Will help me all my journey through; And give me daily cause to raise New Ebenezers to his praise.
