The BMW N20 engine is famous—for the wrong reasons. In today’s video, I'm tearing down a failed N20 4 cylinder turbo engine to see how it works, discuss its fatal flaws and why this one seized up completely. The N20 replaced the perfectly good N52 inline 6 as their base engine for a lot of models, and brought with it a plethora of reliability issues, possibly making it the worst move ever by BMW. We’ve all heard the horror stories about the BMW N20 timing chain failure, plastic guide rails, and oil pump issues. Connecting rod bearing failures are also common, among turbochargers with waste-gate rattle and turbine play. These are all fatal to the engine, requiring a major overhaul. Whether you’re a BMW enthusiast, (or a Toyota enthusiast :) ), a DIY mechanic, or someone considering buying a used BMW 320i/328i (F30), 520i/528i (F10), X1 (E84), X3 (F25), X4 (F26), Z4 (E89), 125i, 220i, 228i, 420i or 428i with this engine, this teardown will educate you on what you might have to face financially later down the road. The successor to this engine is the BMW B48 / B46, which has much better reliability and fixed many of the N20's engine problems. Stay tuned for a teardown on that engine soon! The engine in this video was from a 2015 BMW X3 with 230,000km on it. In this teardown, we cover: Removing the valve cover to inspect the timing chain components. A detailed look on how BMW's ValveTronic Works Inspecting the turbocharger for play and oil starvation. Removing the Engine head to reveal a headgasket breach Dropping the oil pan to look for the "forbidden glitter" (metal shavings). The "Moment of Truth": Identifying the root cause of the engine seizure. Is the N20 a ticking time bomb? Buyer beware - double the oil change intervals with quality oil, and check for signs of turbo wear before it gets too late! Drop a comment down below if you have one of these engines in your car, and how its held up over the last decade.
