Rufus Wainwright plays his song "Damsel In Distress" live in concert at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California on September 12, 2021. Damsel In Distress was originally released as a single and later appeared on Wainwright's tenth studio album, Unfollow The Rules (2020). He said this about the song's composition: "Damsel In Distress is an homage to Joni Mitchell in some ways, particularly the structure. My husband and I now live in Laurel Canyon. I wasn’t that familiar with Joni’s music but Jörn became obsessed and took me on a journey into her music. We ended up hanging out with her and I get now why she’s one of the greats. So it’s part Laurel Canyon, part a song about a personal relationship that I’m trying to come to terms with, but mostly my Mitchell virginity being broken." Wainwright is promoting 2020's Unfollow The Rules release, a tour that was postponed for a year because of the pandemic. Joining him onstage were Brian Green (guitar), Jacob Mann (piano/keyboards), and Alan Hampton (bass). ====================== Damsel In Distress lyrics: Will you forever be a damsel in distress Will you forever be a harbinger of loneliness Yes, I remember smiles Yes, I remember wiles Behind the Square of Sloan Under the English moon within the Chelsea sky Will you forever be wandering the wall Looking for what you see Your father’s face in a waterfall Yes, I remember smiles Yes, I remember wiles Behind the Square of Sloan Under the English moon within the Chelsea sky So much You got exactly that You got exactly what you wanted But what the hell is that? Who do you think I am? A traveler on the wind? I am a prince of man who was raised to soon be king All I can do is fight All I can do is wright Behind the Square of Sloan Under the English moon there I learned to survive So much You got exactly that You got exactly what you wanted But what the hell is that? I hope you find your way for the sake of what we’ve lost And that there comes a day When you realize the precious cost Yes, I remember smiles Yes, I remember wiles Behind the Square of Sloan Under the English moon you in your disguise So much You got exactly that You got exactly what you wanted What the hell is that Will you forever be A damsel in distress Will you forever be A damsel in distress Will you forever be A damsel in distress Will you forever be A damsel in distress =============================== Unfollow The Rules live tour dates (2021): Sept. 9 - Los Angeles, CA @ Greek Theatre (w/ Aimee Mann) Sept. 10 - San Diego, CA @ Humphrey's By The Bay (w/ Aimee Mann) Sept. 12 - Saratoga, CA @ Mountain Winery (w/ Aimee Mann) Sept. 20 - Kansas City, MO @ Uptown Theater (w/ José González) Sept. 21 - Des Moines, IA @ Hoyt Sherman Place (w/ José González) Sept. 23 - Minneapolis, MN @ Northrop Memorial Auditorium (w/ José González) Sept. 24 - Chicago, IL @ Chicago Theatre (w/ José González) Sept. 25 - Carmel, IN @ The Palladium (w/ José González) Sept. 26 - Detroit, MI @ Masonic Temple (w/ José González) Sept. 28 - Washington, DC @ The Anthem (w/ José González) Sept. 29 - Boston, MA @ Orpheum Theatre (w/ José González) Sept. 30 - New York, NY @ The Rooftop at Pier 17 (w/ José González) Oct. 2 - Glenside, PA @ Keswick Theatre (w/ José González) Oct. 3 - Huntington, NY @ The Paramount Oct. 9 - Edinburgh, Scotland @ Usher Hall Oct. 10 - Manchester, England @ Bridgewater Hall Oct. 12 - Sheffield, England @ City Hall Oct. 13 - York, England @ Barbican Oct. 15 - Cambridge, England @ The Corn Exchange Oct. 17 - Southend-on-Sea, England @ Cliffs Pavilion Oct. 19 - London, England @ The London Palladium Oct. 20 - Brighton, England @ Brighton Dome ========================= Rufus Wainwright official bio: Praised by the New York Times for his “genuine originality,” Rufus Wainwright has established himself as one of the great male vocalists and songwriters of his generation.
