Hello again, Classical MIDI fans! We continue in our "Symphonic Journey" with the second movement from Robert Schumann's Third Symphony, "Rhenish"! In the form of a Scherzo, the dance is actually a "ländler": a popular Austrian folk dance at the time. But it's presented not quite in the traditional "minuet and trio" structure, but rather more akin to a theme and variations, albeit a short one as the movement clocks in around 6 minutes long. We also get more musical references - both past and future - as we did in the first movement! The ländler itself is seen in Mozart, Haydn and Schubert in the past, and again in Bruckner and Mahler (multiple times!) in the future. There is a moment where the strings and horns sit gently on an open chord as a single bassoon plays the melody - strongly reminding on of Dvořák, and the list goes on. On the technical front, the new template is actually holding up well, with only very minor adjustments needed in this second movement - mostly around balancing individual articulations within single virtual instrument instances against each other. For example, the trills in the CSS libraries are quite a bit lower in volume, compared to other techniques, while the shorts are quite a bit louder. I'd already identified and isolated those differences before; this work focused on refining the balances in each section. I also tweaked the EQ a bit more on the Double bass sections, mostly due to the lack of a "CSSS Soloist" to add the subtle bite from a "first chair" that all the other sections have when blended the two libraries together.
