In September, London Mayor Sadiq Khan re-invigorated his desire to overhaul London’s Oxford Street by pedestrianising it along its full length – from Marble Arch to Tottenham Court Road. But is this the right approach? The street’s pavements are bustling, even more so following the opening of the Elizabeth Line, which has brought several hundred thousand additional people to the area each day. Creating more space for them by closing the road and reclaiming the space may seem logical, and we generally never regret pedestrianising streets. However, this might be one of the most ambitious pedestrianisation schemes the world has ever seen. 2km of one of London’s key radial corridors would be closed to traffic – including a crucial bus corridor. It’s a bold proposal – but London has never exactly shied away from these. What do you think? Is pedestrianising Oxford Street a logical next step, or a step too far? Apologies for this! I did check the audio as I suspected something like this was happening but when I played it through my earphones during editing it appeared all ok but I guess not! I’ll make sure this doesn’t happen in future videos. One day I will nail sound design I promise.
