With water flowing from a nearby cave, Spring Mill began as a small, humble grist mill, but rapidly transformed into a vibrant community, including a sash-type sawmill, a distillery, and even an overnight stagecoach stop! Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever and, between the railroads and larger, regional flour mills, Spring Mill was abandoned and nearly forgotten. Fortunately, the State of Indiana came to the rescue and, with the Civilian Conservation Corps, both the grist mill, and the entire, surrounding pioneer village were restored as a living history museum! Decades later, the waterwheel, among other things, were falling into disrepair again, but they're now newly restored and back up and running. Watch as the millers not only grind corn into fresh cornmeal, but even give me access to the off-limits basement area to see the machinery that the public is never allowed to see. After a few more decades, the mill needed serious work, but thanks to a dedicated group of staff and volunteers, the mill is back up and running. Join me as I explore this historic mill, and even get special access to the hidden mechanical spaces normally off-limits to the public. Filmed on-location.
