A programme of music that sparks joy, love, warmth, and passion — played on the virtual organ of Tewkesbury Abbey, with a pedal piano detour and a theremin surprise. Music connects us across continents, centuries, and traditions — and I'm grateful for every one of you. Instrument: Hauptwerk — Tewkesbury Abbey, Milton Organ (originally Robert Dallam c.1631; Kenneth Jones rebuild 1997; 4 manuals, 68 stops, 4,611 pipes). Sample set by @beautyinsound — visit https://www.beautyinsound.co.uk/colle... to explore their Hauptwerk sample sets. 0:00 WALTER BATTISON HAYNES (1859–1900) — Andante No. 2 (from Two Andantes, Op. 14) Battison Haynes was organist at the Chapel Royal, Savoy, and professor at the Royal Academy of Music. He studied in Leipzig under Reinecke and Jadassohn before returning to London. He died tragically young at just 40. 6:01 GORDON YOUNG (1919–1998) — Prelude in Classic Style Young studied with Alexander McCurdy at the Curtis Institute and served as organist and choirmaster at First Presbyterian Church, Detroit, for over three decades. He published more than 800 works, but the Prelude in Classic Style remains his most famous. 10:27 GABRIEL FAURÉ (1845–1924) — Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11 (arr. Maurice Coates) Fauré composed this when he was just 19, as a student at the École Niedermeyer, where it won first prize. He dedicated it to César Franck — a connection we return to later. This organ solo arrangement is by my friend Maurice Coates. 21:07 ROBERT SCHUMANN (1810–1856) — Sketch No. 1 (from Four Sketches for Pedal Piano, Op. 58) Here we leave the organ for the pedal piano! In 1845 the Schumanns rented a pedal attachment for their grand piano in Dresden. Robert fell in love with it and composed three sets of pieces during his "Fugenpassion." He even convinced Mendelssohn to establish a pedal piano class at the Leipzig Conservatory. The instrument vanished by the early 20th century — tonight we revive it digitally using Pianoteq with custom code. 26:55 GRAHAM TWIST (b. 1958) — Jubilate Graham composed Jubilate in February 2021 as a response to growing hope during the Covid vaccination rollout. He won the Tim Knight Music composition competition with this piece (published in Organ Music for Joyful Moments). @grahamtwist 34:40 RIEN SCHALKWIJK — A Rainy Day (Cantabile No. 21, Op. 43) Rien is a Dutch composer and organist with a passion for forgotten and mostly unknown organ music. "A Rainy Day" is lyrical, gentle, and atmospheric — proof that even a rainy day can be beautiful. @RienSchalkwijk 39:59 CÉSAR FRANCK (1822–1890) — Cantabile, FWV 36 The middle piece of Franck's Trois Pièces (1878), written for the Cavaillé-Coll organ at the Trocadéro in Paris. "Cantabile" means "in a singing style" — and remember that the young Fauré dedicated his Cantique to Franck. Here we hear the master himself. 47:08 BERNARD HERRMANN (1911–1975) — Scène d'amour from Vertigo (arr. Aaron Shows) Herrmann's score for Hitchcock's 1958 masterpiece is one of cinema's greatest love themes. This organ arrangement is by my friend @aaronshows, a Los Angeles-based composer, organist, and pianist whose film credits include Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Haunted Mansion, and The Addams Family. 53:41 SERGEI RACHMANINOFF (1873–1943) — Vocalise, Op. 34, No. 14 Rachmaninoff's Vocalise (1912) is famously wordless: the singer vocalises on a single vowel. The absence of text makes it universal. The theremin's ethereal, voice-like quality is a perfect match for this most beloved of melodies. Orchestral backing track is my own arrangement. 1:03:16 THÉODORE DUBOIS (1837–1924) — Toccata in G major Dubois was Director of the Paris Conservatoire from 1896 to 1905. His Toccata, from the Douze Pièces pour Orgue (1886), is a brilliant neo-classical allegro with a contrasting lyrical central episode.
