Tuesday, 19 August 2025 – At today’s Queensland Media Club networking lunch, Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Pat Conroy MP provided insight into issues pivotal to Australia’s defence industrial base and growing domestic and export-based supply chain opportunities. He announced a $1.3b investment over 10 years in counter-drone capabilities to be ready for the 2032 Olympic Games. Following the announcement, Minister Conroy took questions from the Queensland Media Gallery: 00:23 – Compère Hayden Johnson (The Courier Mail) welcomes Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Pat Conroy MP to the stage 01:23 – Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Pat Conroy MP addresses the QMC 26:07 – MEDIA Q&A SESSION: (Hayden Johnson, Courier Mail) One of the government policymakers told me that in defence industry politics is pertinent still. Do you agree with that? And can you distil some advice for businesses who may be in this room looking to get ahead with these billions of dollars in contracts the government's going to award over the next decade? 27:37 – (Hayden Johnson, Courier Mail) So the fact that the Defence Ministers is from Victoria had no part in Geelong getting the Hanwha contract over Queensland's Rheinmetall? 28:44 – (Fraser Barton, AAP) The US Defence Chief previously said this year that allied nations should be upping their defence budgets. Is this investment and what you're talking about today with counter drones and drone operation, as well as investment in North Queensland, a rebuff to that narrative? 30:33 – (Hayden Johnson, Courier Mail) As you mentioned, that there's an AUKUS review going on, and it seems … the US is trying to extract as many concessions from Australia as possible. Is it inevitable that our defence spending will reach, maybe not 5%, but a couple of percentage points higher than what it's at now? 32:17 – (Fraser Barton, AAP) One of the things you mentioned was the Ghost Bat … but a keyword you used was “if” it progresses past production … when will the taxpayers and when will Australians know whether it will go past that next stage and what warrants it going to that full production stage? 34:49 – (Andrew Messenger, The Guardian) Next month, we're signing a defence treaty with PNG … PNG and Australia have always had a close relationship … So why is it necessary to have a defence treaty with PNG? 37:25 – (Hayden Johnson, Courier Mail) Do you feel like Australia's playing like a ‘whack-a-mole’ game with China? Because every time we seem to solve a problem with the Pacific, another one pops up? 40:25 – (Lexy Hamilton-Smith, ABC News) I just want to follow up on Nauru … looking at things like renewable energy, phosphate industry, marine fisheries, ecotourism … what are your concerns about that and does it trigger any obligations to Nauru under the treaty that we have with them? 43:14 – (Andrew Messenger, The Guardian) Will one of the conditions of the treaty with PNG be that they can't enter into any defence or security arrangements with China, which is similar to the deal with the PNG NRL team? 44:17 – (Fraser Barton, AAP) Do you think China's overplayed its hand in trying to influence Taiwan attending the forum? And how will you ensure China will not play any role in the PIF given the declaration of ‘no development partners’ from the Solomons? 47:23 – (Lexy Hamilton-Smith, ABC News) You've mentioned the use of drones in Ukraine and some of the incredible wins that they've had. But I understand you have some concerns about what the positives and negatives are in relation to using similar technology in Australia. Can you expand on that? 49:04 – (Fraser Barton, AAP) Are you able to outline where negotiations are with the bilateral agreement with Kiribati? 49:36 – (Hayden Johnson, Courier Mail) I want to go back to what you said before Minister around “there needs to be more work done to put SMEs to make sure they're part of the equation”. What specifically needs to be done and what are you doing to ensure that's the case? 52:11 – (Hayden Johnson, Courier Mail) I mentioned at the start that you were the longest serving Defence minister since the 1970s.
