Protecting Tufted Puffins Along the Oregon Coast explores the quiet but urgent work underway to understand and conserve one of the Pacific Northwest’s most beloved seabirds. Tufted puffins have long captured people’s imaginations with their bright orange bills, golden plumes, and unmistakable presence along the Oregon coast. But beneath their charismatic appearance lies a sobering reality. Over the past several decades, tufted puffin populations in Oregon have declined by roughly 90 percent, reflecting broader changes in ocean conditions and marine ecosystems. Through conversations with researchers, conservationists, and community partners, this short documentary looks at why puffins are struggling, what their decline tells us about the health of the ocean, and how people are coming together to respond. From long-term monitoring at Cannon Beach to Oregon’s first Tufted Puffin Conservation Action Plan, the film follows both the science and the collaboration behind ongoing conservation efforts. The story also captures a new approach to seabird research, including the first permitted drone flights at Haystack Rock in Pacific City, offering a glimpse into how emerging tools may help monitor habitat and reduce disturbance while expanding what we can learn. At its heart, this film is about connection: why people care so deeply about puffins, what is at stake if they disappear, and why there is still reason for hope. Organizations and conservation partners: -Audubon Seabird Institute -Bird Alliance of Oregon -U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service -Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife -Friends of Haystack Rock -Haystack Rock Awareness Program -American Bird Conservancy -Oregon State University -Oregon Coast Aquarium -Shoreline Education for Awareness -Seven Capes Bird Alliance These organizations play key roles in seabird research, habitat protection, monitoring, education, and the development of Oregon's Tufted Puffin Conservation Action Plan.
