#science #academia #education #learning Hi present and future science educators, I am sharing my experiences in university teaching as a biochemist/molecular biologist/cell biologist in the hope that the strategies that I established for myself can help you with your teaching! In this video, I take you on a cold Sunday walk and speak openly about the dark side of academia after nearly two decades in research. I share how fixed-term contracts, dependence on supervisors, endless small tasks, and the pressure to “always keep going” can slowly erode work-life balance and mental health for PhD students, postdocs and senior researchers alike. You will hear what it really feels like to carry a heavy teaching load, juggle lab work, admin, supervision and grant writing, while knowing that in the system every single one of us is technically “replaceable”. I also talk about why so many academics work while sick, struggle to set boundaries, and feel isolated in their 30s and 40s despite being experienced and committed to science. But this is not a “everything is bad” rant. I share my mindset and a concrete “way out” that keeps me going: Knowing and valuing your own competences -Actively searching for purpose at each career stage -Allowing yourself to grow in new directions (for me: university teaching and didactics) -Building a community My wish with this channel is to grow a worldwide community of academics who love science and also care about teaching. If you are a PhD student, postdoc, early-career PI, teaching-focused academic or simply science-curious and struggling with similar questions, this video is for you. If this resonates with you, let me know in the comments: Where are you on your academic path? Have you seen people “silently disappear” from academia? What gives you purpose right now? I very much appreciate your comments, so please share all your view and experiences. Every story is different and we need to hear and see many to get the bigger picture :-).
