Daniel Monaghan - They Follow (Inspired by themes from the movie “The VVitch”)

This is one movement of a larger piece that I’m working on that pays hommage to different horror movies that either had a historical impact on the horror genera or me personally. This movement is inspired by the film score from the movie “The VVitch” with the film score written by Mark Korven. One thing that really stood out to me was the use of a choir that specializes in improvisation and performing free form compositions. You can hear them through out the whole movie and add this bone chilling “witch’s sabbath” like sound. The combination of dissonant harmonies, acoustic instruments (no electronic generated sounds), lack of melody, and improv choir create a completely unsettling and raw mood that binds the movie together as a whole. My piece incorporates a lot of these elements such as imitating the sounds of the improve choir and quoting a Puritan hymn (played during the credits of the movie) that is heard at the beginning of my piece. There is never a sense of comfort or resolution in the movie. Both the characters and the viewer feel like you are being watched at all times. No matter how far or fast the characters run, they are always in trouble. As a way to evoke that emotion of being followed/watched, I quote a creepy child’s taunt towards the end of my piece.
