Face-to-face networking is incredibly effective... if you do it well. But if you're making this networking mistake, you're going to destroy your chances of landing a great opportunity. In this tutorial, career expert J.T. O'Donnell shares this CRINGEWORTHY true story of what NOT to do at networking events... --- Today, I wanted to talk about the worst face-to-face networking mistake you can make. I actually witnessed this at a large, professional networking event I attended. There was this man working his way around the room, forcing his way into conversations and interrupting people. He looked uncomfortable doing it, but he continued anyway. I could see that his hands were shaking as he was trying to make small talk. But without even hearing what he was saying, I could tell those interactions were awkward and not going well. He eventually makes his way over to the group I’m networking with and forces his way in. He tells us his name, hands out his business card to every single person, tells us his branding statement, then ends by letting us know he’s looking for work and if we knew of any positions that would suit him, he’d be grateful for the information. This is a classic example of a job seeker who takes what he or she has read online, scripts it out, and goes through the process like a robot. You never want to do this with face-to-face networking. It’s not an exact science. There’s a bit of an art to it, but it’s not complex. It’s about being human, humble, and personable. Most importantly, it’s about listening to others. Let them do the talking. Connect with them. Absorb what they’re saying. This is how you start to build trust with someone. If they trust you, they will be more willing to help you. None of this will ever happen if you’re following a regimented process when it comes to networking. There should be a flow and natural rhythm to it. It’s bad to avoid networking, even if you’re not a confident networker. However, it’s just as bad to approach networking in such a forced way. So, don’t fall into this trap of feeling like you need to follow a checklist next time you’re networking. While you should have some basic questions in mind, make a point to let the conversation flow naturally, and remember to be a good listener.
