Our first episode for season five is here! Tune in as Petty Benitez Johannot discusses the 1956 painting by the late David Medalla (1938-2020), which was part of his very first solo exhibition. About the Artist: David Cortez Medalla (1942-2020) was a Filipino artist, poet, and art organizer known for his kinetic and participatory works. In 1954, at age 16, he entered the University of the Philippines and later Columbia University in New York through the help of poet Mark van Doren. He co-founded Signals London and Artists for Democracy, and in 2000, launched the London Biennale. His “Cloud Canyons (Bubble Machines)” and “A Stitch in Time” were shown at Documenta, Tate Modern, and the Venice Biennale. About the speaker: Purissima Benitez-Johannot is a faculty member of the Dept. of Art Studies at the University of the Philippines Diliman and founding/current Archivist & Curator of the MiraNila Heritage House and Library. She worked for the Independent Curators Incorporated and The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Barbier-Mueller Museum in Geneva. She has edited and authored numerous books and journal articles on contemporary and Southeast Asian art, including The Life and Times of Purita Kalaw-Ledesma (Vibal Foundation 2018), awarded Best Book on Art for the 37th Philippine National Book Award.
