Future of American Foreign Relations -- Challenges and Prospects:UW Global & International Studies UW Global & International Studies "American and the World 20/20" series Future of American Foreign Relations -- Challenges and Prospects Tuesday, Sept 11 -- 4 pm -- University of Wyoming, Union Center Ballroom, Laramie Weds, Sept 12 -- 5:30 pm -- BBHC Coe Auditorium, Cody, WY Thursday, Sept 13 -- 5 pm --Center for the Arts, Music Ensemble Room, Jackson, WY The American foreign policy agenda under President Barack Obama promised a new era of multilateralism and partnership with the global community. In practice, the president's leadership has faced new tests such as changes across the Middle East resulting from the Arab Spring and the Eurozone crisis, as well as the ongoing challenges of Afghanistan, Iran, and states such as Russia and China. Domestically, his agenda has been complicated by a stagnant economy and a politically divided Congress and electorate. Nearing the end of President Obama's first term in office, we now can better evaluate his foreign policy record and agenda for 'change', particularly as he compares to other recent presidents such as President George W. Bush. This distinguished panel of experts will discuss continuity and change in American foreign relations and discuss the opportunities in, and limitations of, U.S. foreign policy as we assess what is in store for the future of American foreign relations. The expert panel includes: Dr. Stephen Krasner, Stanford University. Stephen Krasner is the Graham H. Stuart Professor of International Studies, the Senior Associate Dean for the Social Sciences for the School of Humanities & Sciences, and the Deputy Director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. He formerly served as Director of Policy Planning at the U.S. State Department and the Director for Governance and Development at the National Security Council during the George W. Bush administration. Krasner is also a fellow of the the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Dr. Tanja A. Börzel, Freie Universität Berlin. Tanja Börzel is Professor of Political Science and Chair in European Integration at the Otto-Suhr Institute for Political Science at the Freie Universität Berlin. She has held posts at the University of Heidelberg and is an adjunct faculty member in the University of Wyoming's Global and Area Studies Program. Börzel is also the author of numerous articles focusing on European environmental policy and governance issues. Dr. Thomas Risse, Freie Universität Berlin. Thomas Risse is Director of the Center for Transnational Relations, Foreign and Security Policy at the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science at the Freie Universität Berlin. He is Coordinator of the Research Center 700 "Governance of Areas of Limited Statehood" Project, which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Risse has held teaching and research appointments at the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt, the University of Konstanz, Germany, Cornell and Yale Universities, and the University of Wyoming. He also has served as visiting professor at Stanford and Harvard Universities. Dr. Jean A. Garrison, University of Wyoming. Jean Garrison is Director of the Global and Area Studies Program (formerly the International Studies Program) and Professor of Political Science at the University of Wyoming. Garrison is the past recipient of a Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellowship and has worked in the Office of Chinese and Mongolian Affairs in the U.S. State Department. She also was a visiting fellow with the Mansfield Foundation in Washington, DC. These forums are part of the state-wide International Studies Scholar Lecture Series, now in its 3rd year, funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant the UW International Studies Program received in partnership with all seven of the Wyoming community colleges. "Our International Studies consortium among Wyoming colleges has created a broad-ranging dialogue on international issues and illustrates our commitment to share resources to bring significant speakers on a variety of global issues to Wyoming. Our next goal is to sponsor a new World to Wyoming Initiative to build support to sustain this project beyond Fall 2011," says Dr. Jean Garrison, Director of International Studies. The lecture series is sponsored by the UW International Studies Program, the Wyoming Humanities Council, as well as the Jackson Hole Center for Global Affairs and the Buffalo Bill Historic Center.
