Who named the creeks of Marys Peak, Oregon — and what names were lost before they were written on maps? In the mid-1800s, settlers and surveyors recorded the names of creeks and ridges throughout the Coast Range. But many of those names replaced older ones that were never preserved in official records. This film traces the origins of the waterways that shape Marys Peak — from pioneer-era naming practices to the quiet disappearance of earlier place names. Some names survived through land claims. Others through repetition on maps. Many vanished entirely. Using research informed by materials from the Oregon Geographic Names Board and the Oregon Historical Society, this video explores how places are named, renamed, and sometimes forgotten. This channel shares overlooked stories from Oregon’s pioneer past — the people, places, and decisions that shaped the landscape we see today.
