Dr. Audrey Chen is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Division of Biology at Caltech. Her current work examines the genetic and neural mechanisms underlying sleep. Prior to joining Caltech, she genetically modified the availability of vesicular monoamine transmitters to analyze brain circuits and examine regulation of synaptic transmission. Her work is highlighted in the January 2013 issue of Genetics. As a Neuroethics Fellow in the Center for Neuroscience & Society at the University of Pennsylvania, she is interested in the neurological foundations of moral cognition and the ethical, legal and societal implications of neuroscience research. She is passionate about making science both accessible and fun to kids from age one to ninety-two. In 2007, she was recognized for her special contribution to the quality of the undergraduate student experience in the College of Letters and Science at UCLA. Dr. Chen received her B.A. in Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley and M.S. and Ph.D. in Neurobiology at the University of California, Los Angeles. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) TEDxYouth@Caltech was held on January 19, 2013, at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, CA.
