Light From Joensuu: EPISODE 3 – Light is Life

This time we return to Finland and Joensuu to see how Kari Kola creates a concrete meeting ground for art and science, and how inspiration turns into shared progress. In November 2025, Visual Festival brought international light artists to Joensuu at the invitation of Kari Kola. The festival took place at Art Garden Botania, where light, nature, and art meet in a very tangible way. The artists spoke about light as a fundamental force. In light art, that force becomes meaning, emotion, and shared experience. At the same time, light art works as a practical testing ground for photonics, where ideas are tested, technology is stretched, and new applications emerge through experimentation. Joensuu left a strong impression. The scale of photonics research, the university laboratories, and the close collaboration between students, researchers, and companies surprised many of the visitors. What they encountered was not a local niche, but a globally relevant center of light expertise. When art and science learn from each other, progress accelerates. Light becomes more than art. It becomes a way to shape a better future.
