Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SoVA) is an uncommon cardiac defect characterized by an abnormal dilatation of the aortic root between the sinotubular ridge and the aortic valve annulus. These aneurysms can be either congenital or acquired. Congenital aneurysms are often associated with other cardiac anomalies, such as ventricular septal defects or aortic valve dysfunction. Acquired sinus of Valsalva aneurysms can result from conditions like infective endocarditis, trauma, or even connective tissue disorders like Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. They can also develop as a complication of aortic aneurysms or even after certain cardiac surgeries. A rupture of the sinus of Valsalva aneurysm creates an abnormal shunt between the aorta and adjacent chambers, potentially leading to heart failure or even multi-organ failure. Without prompt surgical intervention, the morbidity and mortality rates are significantly high.
