3rd time I filmed an onboard journey on the Tarka Line last covered in August 2019 Onboard a 3 car Class 158 on the first Saturday service of the Morning which is the 0631 to Exeter Central covering as Exeter St Davids calling at Umberleigh, Eggesford, Copplestone, Crediton and Exeter St Davids. Starting our journey at Barnstaple originally opened on the North Devon Railway in 1854 to Credition. Today's station dates from 1874 originally known as Barnstaple Junction where the station use to continue beyond to Fremington, Instow, Bideford and Great Torrington however the line was cut back to Barnstaple in 1965 The former Ifracombe line now forms the Tarka Trail or South West Coast Path. For the station itself now houses a cafe opened in 2008 in the station building. The 1st station we pass is Chapelton which is a request stop opened in 1854 however the present station dates from 1875. In 2016 Chapelton was ranked as the 9th least used station in Britain. Our 1st stop is Umberleigh which these days even its a request stop that trains often stop here with hourly operating Mondays to Saturdays and 2 hourly on Sundays in either direction. Then we pass Portsmouth Arms which is named after a nearby pub which adjacent to the station itself. It's also located within a mile of an English historic Manor House called Northcote Manor which was rebuilt in 1716 now serves as a hotel. Originally opened with 2 platforms however the former down was taken out of use around the time the line was singled. After passing under the A377 we pass Kings Nympton which opened as South Molton Road which was renamed to todays name in 1951. At Eggesford station which once had a signal box until it was taken out of use in 1987. a passing loop with the main reason being the line between Barnstaple and Crediton being tokened in 2 sections with the 1st section between Barnstaple and Eggesford and the other being Eggesford and Crediton however only 1 train is allowed on each section at a time. Passing Lapford like Portsmouth Arms had originally 2 platforms however the 2nd platform was eventually removed as well as former goods sidings. Although certain bridges crossing the River Taw are built for double track between Eggesford and Copplestone however a 2nd line has never been built. Then we pass Morchard Road which is a quiet station which the station name is named after the Morchard Bishop which a few miles to the North east. Our next stop is Copplestone which is now a compulsory stop for all services since development and rise in passenger numbers in recent years. Just before Yeoford our line joins at Coleford Junction alongside the Dartmoor Line from Okehampton which was originally opened in 1865 when passenger services ran via Okehampton, Bude as well as Bere Alston on the Tamar Valley Line to Plymouth but in 1968 services was cut back to Okehampton before passenger services were withdrawn In 1972 From 1997 to 2019 direct Sunday Summer services were provided from Exeter St Davids however following rising demand and despite the Coronavirus Pandemic in 2020 the line eventually finally received its long awaited return service full time on November 21st 2021 which was at first as 1 every 2 hours to and from Exeter Central and St James Park however since May 2022 all Okehampton services are now hourly. There were proposals to try to reinstate the full route between Exeter and Plymouth via Okehampton and Bude as an alternative route to the South Devon Main Line however it remains unlikely to happen due to High costs. Passing Yeoford although has one platform is a request stop at present however the former up platform on the Dartmoor Line is still intact, there had been plans for the Dartmoor Line platform reinstated to allow interchange between the 2 lines however nothing has been proceeded. Before Crediton our train stops at a signal box on the level crossing to hand the token with the rest of the line being controlled south by the signal box as far as Cowley Bridge Junction. Credition is the only interchange of the 2 lines but also a passing loop with 2 platforms. The station itself still retains it's LSWR colour feel to it and also in the Summer months on Sundays is served by trains to Okehampton. Passing Newton St Cyres opened on May 12th 1851, It’s nowadays a request stop however due to the length of the platform only 1 set of doors can be opened here. At Cowley Bridge Junction the Tarka Line crosses the River Exe and joins up with the Bristol to Exeter Line to Exeter St Davids.
