"Ritual for Orchestra and Electronics" (In Memoriam Pierre Boulez) composer: Dai Fujikura performed by Pacific Philharmonia Tokyo Norichika Iimori (conductor), Aki Shiraishi (electronics), Koichi Ishimaru (electronics) (Uploading with kind permission from Pacific Philharmonia Tokyo, Norichika Iimori) Co-commissioned by commissioned by Lucerne Festival and IRCAM-Centre Pompidou, with the support of the Foundation Pierre Boulez, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and Pacific Philharmonia Tokyo instrumentation: 2.2.2.2./2.2.2.0/STRINGS + electronics (tape) Strings: (Minimum: 2, 1, 2, 2, 1) – This piece can also be performed by an orchestral string section (e.g., 14, 12, 10, 8, 6.) The electronics of Ritual consist in a tape part to be played alongside the acoustic orchestra. Multiple versions are provided: In the score, only the action of the MAIN fader is notated. If you are using the multitrack version of the electronics, you can interpret your mix according to the orchestra’s performance. Additionally, consider the composer’s suggested sonic image for each section. The timings serve as a guide for the electronic music performer during rehearsals. The electronics track is a single continuous file, and synchronization with the orchestra should remain flexible rather than exact. Speakers: The concept of this work is that the electronic sounds should seem to emerge from within the orchestra rather than surrounding the audience. Therefore, all speakers should be positioned near the orchestra, facing the audience. If the venue has overhead or side-stage speakers, they can also be used, provided they are of good sound quality. Additionally, smaller speakers can be placed among the musicians to further enhance the sense of togetherness between the orchestra and electronics. Channel routing is open to interpretation.
