My music for orchestra & chorus with image. Photo: Bruce Breland. (My concept piece called "An arm and a leg for art"... This shameless post depicts me in Graduate School at Carnegie Mellon University in 1973. I was studying with Robert Lepper and Bruce Breland. My thesis "Tailmades" opined that Art had 3 R's: Ritual, Remnants and Reminiscing. This involved documenting life wearing formalwear which was in agreement with this thought of John Cage: "Theatre takes place all the time, wherever one is. And art simply facilitates persuading one this is the case." Wearing these clothes everyday took the urgency from doing something that attempted to be 'art' and refused to compete with object making on route to some kind of credentials. Aside from living, i cast a Giacometti shadow, Suckled the Ohio River, collected van Gogh air and took fine art walks in Panther Hollow. I acknowledge with gratitude my experience at CMU and the freedom which enabled me to express myself in this quest for the ephemeral. I believe investigations into areas of this kind of subjectivity has merit. My defense in a seminar evaluation was... A, B, C, D - Therefore Babe Ruth; therefor watermelon. i have fond memories of my two great mentors who improved me and opened a door toward a life of inquiry. Thank you for reading and listening. - phil.
