Wise-hearted Men, gifted with divine skills are placed in charge of the sanctuary’s construction, and the people are once again commanded to keep the sabbath. Because of Moses’ long absence, the people become restless. Fearing that Moses may never return, they implore Aaron to ‘make them gods who can go before them’. Under pressure from the people, Aaron collects gold from the people makes the golden calf, declaring it to be a representation of their God and that the next day would be a festival unto YHVH. The people thus begin to worship this idol, falling into grave sin. Informing Moses of the people’s fall into idolatry, God tests Moses’ heart by proposing to eradicate them, but Moses intercedes on their behalf. Moses descends from Mount Sinai carrying the stone tablets of the covenant and seeing the people at a distance revelling in their sin, he proceeds to break them, confronting the people and destroying the golden calf. Moses calls upon those who are truly devoted to YHVH and the tribe of Levi respond, leading to their consecration as the priests of the nation. When Moses pleads to God to take the sins of the people upon himself, God declares that each man would be responsible for his own sin. Moses prepares a new set of tablets and once more ascends the mountain, where God re-inscribes the covenant on these second tablets of stone. On the mountain, Moses is also granted a vision, witnessing the divine thirteen attributes of mercy. So radiant is Moses’ face upon his return, that he must cover it with a veil, which he removes only to speak with God and to teach the law to his people. ******* More Information Want to learn more?
