Sundown towns. Let’s talk about it. This is place #93: Marion County, Indiana — home to the state capital, Indianapolis. When people think of sundown towns, they often picture small rural communities. But Marion County tells a different story. This episode traces a timeline of events that reveal how racial exclusion operated not just through signs and rumors, but through a larger infrastructure. From the 1845 lynching of John Tucker in downtown Indianapolis, to the 1919 Garfield Park riot, Marion County shows how violence and intimidation shaped the racial boundaries of the capital. But the story doesn’t stop there. Black life in Marion County was also vibrant and centralized. Indiana Avenue became the heart of Black culture, business, and community, where Madam C.J. Walker built her empire beginning in 1910. At the same time, racial power organized politically. The Klan gained massive influence in Indiana during the 1920s, operating openly in Indianapolis and shaping elections and public policy. By the 1930s, the system moved from mobs to maps. Redlining and restrictive covenants drew racial boundaries across Marion County neighborhoods, locking segregation into housing and investment patterns. Later infrastructure projects, including highway construction through historically Black neighborhoods, reinforced those divisions. This episode explores how segregation, terror, and violence worked together as infrastructure — shaping the development of the capital county and influencing the rest of the state. If you’re from Marion County, drop your neighborhood in the comments. Next week, we move to another county and continue mapping this history. support and download your free research guide: https://linktr.ee/RinaFree #SundownTowns #BlackHistory #IndianaHistory #HiddenHistory #RacialHistory #Segregation #Redlining #AmericanHistory #HistoricalTruth #Indianapolis
