This video outlines some of the problems I've had as a Telus "smart hub" customer. The problems that I've covered in this video here aren't an exhaustive list of issues that I've had, but they're the most serious ones. The biggest issues I've had are security and performance related. The security issues amount to poor design. While the vendor was smart enough to use randomized wifi passwords, every one of these units that I have ever touched locally has a password of "admin" for the web interface and it can't be changed. The first time the radio has an upset, it simply resets factory defaults and reboots itself. That includes all configurations and passwords. I guess this was some kind of approach to reduce support calls or something, I don't know. The performance issue though is the one that nags me the worst day to day. I have to fiddle with this radio every single day due to performance issues. The throughput is generally more than good enough for my needs, but it's the latency and packet loss that makes it virtually unusable at times. If a single computer anywhere in the house so much as refreshes facebook.com, the latency of the link IMMEDIATELY jumps to as much as half a second to a few seconds, sometimes even more. Most of the time, the latency with a bit of traffic ranges from 300 milliseconds up to maybe 3000 to 5000 milliseconds, but I've even had periods where I've seen latency as high as 15,000 to 30,000 milliseconds. I have complained about this repeatedly with Telus until I finally gave up. Their official reply is always the same "It's marked as an area of concern". And, since the vast majority of end users wouldn't even know what latency is, let alone know how/why it's an issue or how to check and since most users don't really "administrate" their own gear, virtually every issue I've outlined here has just sailed under the radar for years for the 4G/LTE "home" users.
