SOUTH KESTEVEN PARISH #10: ANCASTER Ancaster – “Anna’s Roman Fort” Hello again South Kesteven, its been a while. This week in your lovely part of Lincolnshire, we’re taking on perhaps the most historic village anywhere in the area. This is Ancaster, which lies on the route of the Roman Road Ermine Street, and once had a thriving Roman Town. Even the place name Ancaster is Roman, meaning as it does, Anna’s Roman Fort. The connection to the empire is quite clear all around this place. There are several information boards dotted about that tell you bits of Roman history, and even the local school has adopted the head of a legionnaire as its logo. As well as Ermine Street, Ancaster also lies on its junction with King Street – a second Roman Road. To the Northwest there was a marching camp, and excavations in and around the village have previously turned up a cemetery containing more than 250 Roman burials, including 11 stone sarcophagi. In the later years of Roman occupation, a large stone wall with accompanying ditches was erected around the town, possibly for defence against marauding Saxons. Its definitely Roman themed this one, but don’t be fooled. Ancaster has a lot more.
