Slavery at the Cape dates back to the arrival of the Dutch East India Company in 1652. They landed with only a small number of personal slaves, but towards the end of the 17th century, this all changed when the first cargo of nearly 200 slaves arrived at the Cape colony. It marked the beginning of the slave trade in Cape Town and would change the course of the country forever. Many descendants still live across the Mother City today.
