The Heart Sutra is a short Mahayana Buddhist sutra/scripture, particularly significant in Zen, because it contains the entire teaching of prajna-paramita (perfection of wisdom). It teaches us that all phenomena, including the self, are empty (shunyata) of inherent existence. Emptiness does not mean nothingness. Emptiness means that something is empty of a separate self. This teaching always brings us to a place of non fear and nonviolence. While a universal text in Mahayana Buddhism, it is chanted daily in Zen temples and immediately gives us a big "Don't know" that resonates deeply with our practice 24/7! Highlighting that through understanding and attaining emptiness, one can transform one's suffering into wisdom, attain liberation, and skillfully use that wisdom and liberation to help all beings. Moment, by moment, by moment, X 10,000 years! (They are not separate from us!) Our practice is not for ourselves. It is for all beings. We can use this sutra to penetrate the nature of interbeing. The mantra at the end is very powerful. Gate, gate,pāragate,pārasamgate, bodhi svāhā Gate means gone: Gone from suffering to the liberation from suffering. Gone from forgetfulness to mindfulness. Gone from duality to nonduality. Gate, gate means gone, gone. Pāragate means gone all the way to the other shore. In Pārasamgate, "*sam"* means everyone, the sangha, the entire community of beings. Everyone gone over to the other shore! Bodhi is the light inside, enlightenment, or awakening. You see, and the vision of reality liberates you. Svāhā, is a cry of joy and triumph, like "Eureka!" or "Hallelujah!" That is what the bodhisattva uttered.
