They deceived and destroyed themselves. They Deceive Themselves (7:1–15) The Delusions (7:1–8) Jeremiah 7:8 But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless. They shouldn't be fooled by those who keep promising their safety because the Temple of the Lord is near. The consequences of choosing lies. (7:9–15) Jeremiah 7:9-10 “‘Will you steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury, burn incense to Baal and follow other gods you have not known, 10 and then come and stand before me in this house, which bears my Name, and say, “We are safe”— safe to do all these detestable things? It’s not that they believed the lies. The reality is, they preferred lies. Jeremiah reminds them of the destroyed Tabernacle at Shiloh because of all the wickedness of God’s people. What we believe, what we say, and what we do, all matter to our Lord. They Destroy Themselves (7:16–31) God’s command. (7:16) God instructs Jeremiah to stop praying for the people. They worship false gods, and hurt themselves. (7:17–19) They make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven and give drink offerings to other gods. They experience God’s wrath and are consumed. (7:20) Jeremiah 7:20 “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: My anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place—on man and beast, on the trees of the field and on the crops of your land-and it will burn and not be quenched. They are like the people God led out of Egypt. (7:21–26) God continues to send prophets, but no one listens. They do not respond to truth. (7:27–29) The truth is no longer heard on their lips. They sin right before God’s eyes. (7:30) They set up idols in God’s own Temple. They sacrifice their own children. (7:31-34) Jeremiah 7:31 They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire—something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind. When we deny truth, killing what we love makes sense.
