AI Mini-conference: 02.06 Responsible Use of AI in Research Projects

Jennifer Chubb, University of York (Science and Technology Studies Unit) Artificial Intelligence is providing new ways to conduct and manage research and in some cases, changing the nature of research itself. Gen AI can offer very convincing illusions of human-like understanding, however, students conducting research projects in taught programmes need to stay alert to the considerations relating to the use of AI tools concerning quality, bias, reproducibility, information degradation, and ethics. The University values research activities and research-led teaching. Our guidelines focus on Responsible AI practice, particularly with widely available 'off the shelf' tools, while remaining inclusive of numerical methods and adaptable to future advancements. This session offers an introduction to good practice and policy in this area.
