The Institute for Governance and Civics invited Amity Shlaes for a discussion on her book, "The Great Society: A New History." In this book, Shlaes examines the sweeping ambitions of the 1960s, an era marked by big public programs, national idealism, and fierce debate over the right path to economic and social progress. She traces how major initiatives under multiple administrations shaped the country’s trajectory, highlighting both the aspirations and the unintended outcomes that followed. Her work offers a clear look at how policy choices from that period continue to influence national conversations today. This event was part of the Spring 2026 IGC Speaker Series at Florida State University. The Institute for Governance and Civics (IGC) is dedicated to becoming the nation's premier policy institute in creating the next generation of effective citizens and responsible leaders. Established in 2023, the IGC advances constitutional liberty, economic liberty, conscience liberty, and educational liberty through bold research, transformative teaching, and fearless debate.
