What happens when socialism is implemented at a national scale? Daniel Di Martino, who grew up in Venezuela, will share his personal story of escaping the country and the broader background behind the policies that destroyed its economy. His talk will trace how government control, corruption, and mismanagement turned one of Latin America’s richest nations into a place of crisis and scarcity. Di Martino will also discuss the lessons other nations can learn from Venezuela’s collapse and the importance of protecting economic freedom. Daniel Di Martino was born in 1999 in Venezuela to a middle-class family whose grandparents had fled poverty in Italy and Spain in the 1950s for a better life in what was then one of the world’s richest countries. His family prospered for decades under Venezuela’s free-market system, but Daniel grew up during Hugo Chávez’s presidency and witnessed the country’s collapse due to socialist policies. Inflation, blackouts, and food shortages severely affected his family’s life. In 2016, he left Venezuela after earning a full-tuition scholarship to Indiana University–Indianapolis, awarded to only one international student per year. He graduated in 2019 with highest honors in Quantitative Economics and later began a PhD at Columbia University, focusing on immigration economics, particularly assimilation, selection, and fiscal impact. He is currently a fellow at the Manhattan Institute. This event was part of the Fall 2025 IGC Speaker Series at Florida State University. The Institute for Governance and Civics (IGC) is dedicated to becoming the nation's premier policy institute in creating the next generation of effective citizens and responsible leaders. Established in 2023, the IGC advances constitutional liberty, economic liberty, conscience liberty, and educational liberty through bold research, transformative teaching, and fearless debate.
