This opera is inspired by Spinoza’s idea of conatus — the inner striving of each being to persevere in its existence. Instead of treating desire as something guilty or corrupt, the libretto portrays desire as the very power that keeps the singer alive, moving, and growing. The tenor’s inner monologue shows how trying to repress this drive leads to withering and despair, while understanding it brings freedom and active joy. The chorus lines “Not a sin, but life in motion” and “The fire that refuses to fade” turn Spinoza’s abstract metaphysics into emotional images: desire as a living fire and a moving ocean. By embracing his own conatus instead of condemning it, the protagonist discovers that true ethics is not about killing desire, but about knowing it, guiding it, and letting it flow toward more powerful and generous ways of living. Every wound in my chest became a silent spark, Every broken yesterday turned into gold. I am more than the weight of the nights I survived, More than ashes that whisper I should drown. There is something inside me that keeps me alive, Lifting my failing body from the ground. When I fall, when I break, Something in me still reaches, still aches. When I doubt, when I fade, A hidden flame refuses to be afraid. Oh, desire in my veins, you keep my being awake, You are the storm, you are the river, you are every choice I make. You are not a sin, you are the pulse of my days, You are the force that pulls me through the maze. Let me understand you, let me call you by name, So I can rise from my chains, not with guilt, but with flame. They have told me to bury the fire in my eyes, To be silent, to be modest, to obey. But the more I denied what was burning inside, The more my heart withered and drifted away. I have knelt in the dust, saying, “Make me small,” Trying hard to erase my will to live. Yet the more I erased, the more I heard the call: “Stand up, you were made to rise and give.” When I fall, when I break, Something in me still reaches, still aches. When I doubt, when I fade, A hidden flame refuses to be afraid. Oh, desire in my veins, you keep my being awake, You are the storm, you are the river, you are every choice I make. You are not a sin, you are the pulse of my days, You are the force that pulls me through the maze. Let me understand you, let me call you by name, So I can walk through my fear, not with guilt, but with flame. What if my longing is the way life speaks? What if my hunger is the strength of the weak? What if this reaching that never lets go Is the secret through which I learn to grow? Breathe, breathe, keep breathing, Stay, stay, keep being. I am not dirty for wanting to stay, I am not guilty for seeking a way. Breathe, breathe, keep burning, Turn, turn, keep turning. Now I stand in the storm with my eyes open wide, Every tear on my face becomes a star. I will no longer curse the force inside, For it carried me here from afar. I am the effort that refuses to cease, I am the reaching that never lets go. In every heartbeat I search for peace, In every desire I learn to grow. When I fall, when I break, Still my being keeps choosing to wake. When I doubt, when I fade, Still this flame in my chest will not be betrayed. Oh, desire in my veins, you keep my being awake, You are the sea, you are the thunder, every trembling step I take. You are not a sin, you are the power to stay, You are the strength to rise again when all light runs away. Not a sin, but life in motion, Living fire, living ocean. Let me understand you, not fear you anymore, Let my mind and my longing walk through the same door. I will no longer chain you in the cellar of shame, I will hold you to the light and call you by your name. If I still reach, it means I still live, If I still want, it means I can give. This stubborn flame, even when I am afraid, Is the fire in my soul that refuses to fade. The fire that refuses, refuses to fade… #Opera #Soprano #tenoraria #PhilosophyInMusic #ClassicalVoice #EpicOpera #OperaAria #Lyrics #ClassicalOpera #OperaSinger#OrchestralAria#EpicOpera#operaperformance
