María Cristina Kiehr, soprano Concerto Soave This version of "Un ferito cavaliero," titled "Cantata di Gustavo Adolpho, Re di Svezia, morto in guerra," is preserved in Modena's Biblioteca Estense as Ms. Mus.G.239. Compiled between 1632 and 1671, it was most likely created after Bellerofonte Castaldi's death in 1649. This manuscript is one of several sources that also preserve Monteverdi's "Lamento d'Arianna," along with various songs composed or attributed to Castaldi. Notably, this lamento survives in at least six manuscript sources. This rendition of "Un ferito cavaliero," also known as "Lamento della regina di Svezia," features slight variations in both text and music compared to other manuscript sources, including F-Pn - Res.Vm7 59, I-Rc - MS 2479, and Chig.Q.VII.99. The cantata’s text centers on the tragic figure of Queen Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg, the widow of King Gustavus Adolphus II of Sweden, who was killed in battle on November 16, 1632. Attributed to Fabio della Corgna, the poem follows a wounded cavalier who brings the news of the king’s death to the queen, plunging her into grief and madness. References: Caluori, E. (1981).
