Beekeeping Tactics: Hunting for Wax Moths in a Weak Colony 🛡️🐝 In beekeeping, a weak colony is a target. Today in the apiary, I’m carrying out a targeted inspection on one of my struggling hives specifically to check for Wax Moth activity. While my other colonies are thriving and the local wasp pressure is currently non-existent, a low bee-to-frame ratio is exactly what the Greater Wax Moth looks for. If the bees can't patrol every inch of the comb, the moths slip in at night to lay their eggs in the cracks up to flipping 600. In this video, I'm checking for: Silken Tunnels: Looking for that tell-tale white webbing or "trails" burrowed deep into the wax cappings. Galleriasis: Checking if any emerging bees are being trapped in their cells by moth silk. Hive Hygiene: Making sure the bottom board is clear of the dark, cylindrical droppings (frass) left behind by moth larvae. The "Nuclear Option": Discussing why I keep my spare freezer ready to treat frames if I find an infestation before it destroys the comb. Beekeeping Pro-Tip: 🏁 Wax moths aren't the "cause" of a hive's death—they are the clean-up crew for a colony that's already failing. By catching them early and reducing the hive space (potentially moving these bees into a poly nuc), we can give the colony a fighting chance to recover and defend their home.
