Full transcription of Ritual Prayer from the album Dark Intervals, by Keith Jarrett (recorded live at Suntory Hall in Tokyo, April 11, 1987). I love these meditative improvisations (and Dark Intervals has some other great ones – Hymn, Recitative, Americana). In this one, Keith really explores the full dynamic range of the piano. He’ll be at a whisper and suddenly explode into the main majestic motif and then return to a soft prayer. For me, it’s one of his most beautiful and moving works. Although there aren’t many notes in this piece, it was surprisingly challenging to get going on this transcription. The hardest part was finding the pulse since there’s a lot of rubato in places, and the “two-eighth” note motif at the beginning seems to be mostly on beat 1 in the first section of the piece but gradually morphs into starting on the “and” of the previous measure (I think!). There are a few parts where I’m sure the rhythms could be interpreted differently, but I just went with what made sense to me. Also, there are probably a few chords where I’ve I left out an inner voice, etc., but overall it sounds just about right to me. In any case, it should give you a good place to begin your own improvising. For information about PDFs, send me an email at [email protected].
