NZAI 2025 Day 2 Keynote - AI as a Force Multiplier for Digital Twins

Alvaro will explore how artificial intelligence functions as a force multiplier for digital twin platforms, amplifying their capabilities whilst addressing critical concerns around data sovereignty. Through the lens of ALMA (Aotearoa Large-Scale Multi-Agent Platform) and its synthetic population of 5 million New Zealanders, I demonstrate how digital twins can deliver the public good, value creation, and security principles whilst fundamentally addressing data privacy concerns that constrain public sector and regulated industry applications. I will also discuss the opportunities of sovereign AI infrastructures for custom solutions tailored to specific business problems rather than off-the-shelf platforms that create vendor lock-in, enabling an organisation to maintain control over their data, algorithms, and strategic direction. Building on these foundations, I will present a roadmap towards a National Digital Twin Initiative that aims to integrate academia, industry, and the public sector, creating a federated ecosystem aligned with Gemini principles of openness, federation, and evolution that serves genuine public benefit whilst maintaining the trust, security, and curation necessary for sustainable implementation.
