Main Ideas: 1) In Section 8 we established that Abraham's seed includes both physical descendants (Jews) as well as spiritual descendants (believers). 2) Chosen by God meant that the the Jews were selected to be God's vehicle to reach the world, but did not mean that they were righteous or favored for salvation. 3) The death of Joseph and the change to a new Pharaoh meant the children of Israel were in bondage, and God responded by raising up Moses to deliver them from slavery.  :::::::: LESSON NOTES :::::::: For the first few Sections of this course our pace was slower because many important events and foundations had to be set. But in our previous section we have now started to pick up the pace. In Section 8 we covered everything from Abraham to Joseph, and there was a lot. We started by looking at the idea of the “Seed” of Abraham and who that phrase applies to. We noted that the Bible talks about both physical seed (the Jewish people) as well as spiritual seed (those who have the faith of Abraham). Both are the seed of Abraham but in different ways, Then, we took a look at another important biblical concept and that is what it means to be chosen by God. There were many ways in which Israel was chosen by God and received many particular benefits, but that “being chosen” did not mean they were favored or automatically righteous in God’s eyes. From there we really started to cover some ground. First, we looked at Isaac and Jacob’s place in the covenant, as well as coving key events in their lives. That led us up to one of the most important people in the book of Genesis: Joseph. Joseph’s role in God’s sovereign work was tremendous and revealed God’s commitment and faithfulness to His people and to His promises. Lastly, we looked at the role of Egypt itself and how God used Egypt in very specific ways to bring his plans to pass. So now, as we conclude the era of the patriarchs  (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph) we begin to move into a brand new era, but even before we get there, we conclude this season by looking at a couple key events that happen to the children of Israel in Egypt.: Joseph dies, the children of Israel increase in number in Egypt (Ex 1:1-13) The new pharaoh enslave the people and “made their lives bitter with hard bondage” (Ex 1:14) He commands all Hebrew midwives to kill all male newborns, they refuse (Ex 1:17) These events are very significant because they shape what comes next. It is in the midst of this scene where we are introduced to the next major player in the biblical storyline: Moses This Hebrew child born during Egyptian slavery will be the key figure of where things go next.
