Matt Waffensmith, Executive Director of Legacy Rehabilitation Group, shares about the use of ultrasound and other modalities in physical therapy practices. With our focus on using the medical rehabilitation model, we can use an array of modalities to assist in our patients’ paths to recovery. One modality option that is used for those with conditions like bursitis or tendonitis is ultrasound. Ultrasound is a therapeutic modality in which sonic energy is deposited in tissue to induce various biological effects, such as: Increasing tissue relaxation Increasing local blood flow, and Even scar tissue breakdown Ultrasound treatments are localized to a specific area of the body, using a gel to act as a medium between the probe and patient’s skin. The probe is kept in constant motion and lays flat against the patient’s skin. Some ultrasound treatments are performed in tandem with electrical stimulation, or “E-Stim”, which is commonly referred to as “Combo treatments”. Ultrasound is almost always performed by a skilled healthcare professional, such as a physical therapist, as incorrect use of the equipment can result in burn or injury.
