European Atherosclerosis Society Consensus Panel on statin-associated muscle symptoms

PCSK9 Forum caught up with Professor Stroes at the 83rd Congress of the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS), Glasgow 22-25 March, 2015 to discuss this recent EAS Consensus Panel paper. Statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS) were very much the hot topic at EAS Glasgow, reflecting the high level of clinical concern in the management of these difficult-to-treat patients. While statins are the indisputable cornerstone for preventing cardiovascular disease, the occurrence of SAMS can threaten the efficacy of treatment and substantially impact the patient’s cardiovascular risk. According to Professor Stroes, SAMS can account for up to 40% of referrals to lipid clinics, highlighting that this is an important unmet clinical need.
