In March of 2020, Americans were told schools would close for “15 days to slow the spread.” For millions of families, those fifteen days turned into months—and in some places more than a year—of closed classrooms. In this interview, I speak with documentary filmmaker Natalya Murakhver, director of the film 15 Days. Natalya was not originally an activist. She was a New York City public school mom who began asking questions when temporary closures became prolonged shutdowns. Her film investigates why American schools stayed closed longer than almost anywhere else in the world and what the consequences were for children and families. Through interviews with parents, educators, and medical experts, 15 Days examines: • What really drove prolonged school closures • The impact on students’ mental health and academic progress • The role of institutions and interest groups in shaping school policy • How parents across the country organized to reopen schools The film also documents the learning loss, isolation, and inequality that many students experienced during extended remote learning. In this conversation, Natalya shares the story behind the documentary, the questions that led her to investigate the issue, and why she believes this moment in history must be documented so it is never repeated. If you care about education, parental involvement, and the future of American schools, this is an important conversation. Watch the documentary: https://www.15daysfilm.com
