Dr. Abhishek Shukla explains whether increasing water intake alone can relieve severe constipation in an elderly person. Dr. Abhishek Shukla explained that constipation is very common in old age. Constipation essentially means hard stools, which occur when stool becomes dry and difficult to pass. When we eat food, it forms a bolus and digestive enzymes from the stomach and bile help in digestion. Most digestion and absorption happen in the small intestine, where nutrients and much of the water are absorbed. By the time waste material reaches the large intestine, its main function is to absorb remaining water and form stool. If there is insufficient water, fiber, or movement of the intestines, the stool becomes hard. Therefore, simply drinking water is helpful but not enough on its own. Elderly patients should drink about 2 to 2.5 liters of water daily, unless restricted by a doctor. Along with this, they must include vegetables, salads, fruits, and roughage-rich foods in their diet. Fiber adds bulk to the stool and helps retain water, making stools soft. Normal intestinal movements, called peristalsis, push the stool forward into the rectum, allowing easy passage. Thus, a balanced diet, adequate hydration, and regular activity together help relieve constipation in older adults
