The WriteLane Podcast returns with a new season focusing on winners of the 2025 Poynter Journalism Prizes. In this episode, Pulitzer Prize winning writer Lane DeGregory, of the Tampa Bay Times, and veteran enterprise editor Maria Carrillo, talk with Sean Sullivan, a reporter for NJ.com about the 90 second TikTok video he created to explore whether a bustling new New Jersey mall was pretending it wasn’t open yet to avoid a tax bill. Though a non-traditional entry, that work won the Roy Peter Clark Prize for Excellence in Short Writing in the Poynter Journalism Prizes contest for Sullivan’s witty take and creativity. “As a reporter … it seemed very fascinating to me because I’m always trying to make very unsexy topics sexy,” Sullivan said. He talks about how he sees social video as playing a role similar to what television used to, and how he’s trying to build an audience. “I √I wanted to go where the people were, and kind of see how we can use the tools that social media gives us in terms of content creation and apply that to journalism.” About WriteLane: A podcast that focuses on the craft of great journalism. Sponsored by the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University and presented by Poynter.
