unpopular opinion but social media is actually better for artists than the old music industry. i know we all just wanna focus entirely on art and being a content creator kinda sucks, but you know what sucked more? when corrupt record labels had a complete monopoly and you needed to be a trust fund nepo baby to have any chance. for normie artists like me with no network and no net worth, social media democratized music to some extent. we can actually build an audience now without industry connections or rich parents. i get why FKA twigs and other established artists diss social media cause they're coming from a different kind of privilege. AND!!!! we do NOT need large audiences anymore!!! you just need YOUR niche people who are the same weird as you. fuck the concept of having "fans" and "celebrities". this video is a random thinking out loud type on a sunday morning where i break down why the artist vs content creator debate is more nuanced than people think, why i still chose to deprioritize content creation to make my best work, how independent artists can navigate this without burning out or selling out (find your format that works for YOU!!! not what everyone else is doing). the music industry will never be perfect but I'd rather have accessible platforms than gatekeepers.
